Benefits of College

There are some lessons that cannot be found in a college textbook, or classroom for that matter. Other than (the obvious) perks of getting a higher-paying job or achieving the lofty characteristic of “being educated”, here are three major benefits of attending college:

1. Exposure

I had never eaten sushi before I attended college, so I find it highly ironic (and very telling) that sushi is now one of my favorite dishes. I’m sure there were sushi spots in my native hometown of Tampa, but it took me going to college – i.e. being in a new environment with new people who frequented places I did not – to try sushi, and a plethora of other cuisines, for myself.

Not to mention, college afforded me the opportunity to travel the world. As a study abroad student, I lived in Germany, Costa Rica, and Colombia. Talk about exposure! I was astounded at how big the world is.

Initially, I recall feeling ashamed and ignorant that all these experiences were, indeed, “new” for me. However, that shame soon morphed into gratitude that I had taken a route that many from my childhood had not been afforded. I got to see more, experience more, taste more, and do more simply because I did what I had to do in middle school and high school to be on the fast track to college.

2. Independence and Personal Responsibility

More than likely, there will be no guidance counselor to remind you to apply for financial aid or register for the correct courses that actually count toward your major. If you’re thinking, “Angel. I got this. I’m already independent.” Then, great! College will be an opportunity to flex your maturity muscle even more. On the other hand, if you are fearful that you’re too dependent on your parents…Then, great! College will present plenty opportunities for you to grow and build independence.

3. New Environment

Sometimes, in certain life situations, the best solution is to just get away: “But God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” (I Cor. 10:13b NKJV)

I was unaware of it at the time, but in retrospect, I now realize that it was God’s providence that I moved away for college (and law school). My relocation was strategic, as it allowed me to grow and develop, without the company, baggage, and chains of people who refused to grow, or who were not going where I was going (in terms of life goals). It’s not that those people were inherently bad or that God did not love them, but my season in community with them was coming to an end, and college (and later law school), was a way to transition me out of those relationships and into purpose.
